Sharpe rise in violent attacks towards retail workers

04 September 2023
Tesco, one of the UK’s largest retailers, is set to introduce body-worn cameras for its staff following the revelation that over 200 employees are subjected to serious physical assaults each month. This move of equipping employees with body worn cameras aligns to similar initiatives to that of Waitrose and Co-op.

In an article published in the Mail on Sunday, Ken Murphy, the Chief Executive of Tesco, announced the supermarket's decision to equip members of staff that need them to deter offenders. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, "Gangs take advantage of the fact we do not share enough information. We'll only be able to stop these thugs if we work together."

Beyond the physical and emotional impact of retail crime, there is a substantial financial burden, often borne by customers. According to the British Retail Consortium, retail crime amounted to £1.76 billion in the 2021/22 period. Of this total, £953 million resulted from customer theft, while £715 million was allocated to crime prevention and employee protection efforts.

At Airsys and AirsysCloud , we offer a comprehensive range of body-worn cameras to suit specific requirements. Some of our models are compliant with British Standard 8593, tailored for the UK market. As a result, videos captured can be submitted as legitimate evidence in a court of law.

Furthermore, we can assist in selecting the right equipment and provide support in implementing the system effectively and ensuring its ongoing maintenance. And our training courses equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to use the equipment effectively in the workplace.
